Tamar Shahinian Guiragossian is an Armenian-Syrian embroidery artist, born and raised in Damascus, Syria.
Today in her 50’s she is a wife, mother, grandmother, businesswoman, artist and still living her dreams.
She was married at the age of 19, with a baccalaureate degree in hand, big dreams, passion for working, and an addiction to arts and culture. Over the years, she dedicated her life to her self-development and to raising her three daughters such that they could be the change she wanted to see in the world.
In 1994, Tamar launched her own business in the world of textile industry through “Shahinian & Mallouhi”, specializing in computerized embroidery services. Designing embroidery patterns for textile companies in Damascus became her new passion through which she developed her skills and unleashed her creativity by mixing colors, threads and fabrics.
In 2018, she released a new line of embroidered items under a brand named “Sparkling Touch”. Despite the success of both her embroidery projects, Tamar’s one dream of creating embroidered artwork never left her side.
Little did she know that 2017 would be a turning point in her 23-year-long career. In 2017, Tamar met awards-winning photographer, Antoun Mezzawi. His extremely beautiful photos fascinated her, but the series of the door knockers of the old Damascene houses captured her mind and soul with their beauty, elegance and the mythological symbols they held within. Over the next two years Tamar worked on blending her embroidery with Mezzawi’s photos which resulted into something extraordinary. This led to a joint exhibition of photographs and embroidered photographs- themed “The Visual Symbols on The Doors of Damascene Houses” in 2019- where Tamar created artworks blending her accumulated experience in the embroidery industry with her artistic vision. Thus becoming the first to offer textile art in Syria and the Middle East.
Over the natural course of this collaboration, Tamar founded “Heritage Through Art”, in collaboration with Antoun Mezzawi, a platform through which she strives to showcase and preserve Syria’s rich heritage and beauty through Mezzawi’s photographs and her embroidered photographs.
Tamar’s ambitions and dreams know no end, and she believes that the best is yet to come. Her motto is to do her best, and let the universe do the rest.
